Almost funny that I planned to spend weekend studying everything to be found about mining here because it's a bit like mining itself, with lil bits 'n pieces on various threads and youtube videos.
I've done a bit of mining in real-world, it's exciting and relaxing with the occasional rush of a good find. There's a crystal mine I go to in Mt Ida, AR now and then. Pay $20 per day and keep all you find. It's the fun of the hunt being paid for.
As for the goof? I was wasting probes by dropping too close together. The info tab mentions 21 m radius but that is hard to judge in game. I learned this by looking at how far away my first strike was today. Judging by eye, if on a run dropping probes, there would have been 2 wasted in that space.
My temporary response, until learning more, is to count out 15 seconds of running between drops.
Also, my first days at it, if a Shog got close, I stopped mining and shot it. Now I notice that they often hang back and let me run by or watch me work the extractor without attacking. No point wasting ammo on them if they aren't going to attack. That being said, a lvl 16 Yog jumped out of nowhere the other day and ate me with one bite. Barely caught glimpse but swear the sound effect was, "Chomp!"
